Congratulations are well in order

If you had told anyone that two weeks after the destructive Aug. 2 flash flood the community would have raised over $10,000 for flood relief, they probably would have said you were crazy. The amount raised as of press time this week is actually just a hair over $12,500. That’s the money that the Long Term Recovery Group will be using to help those in financial distress from flood damage.

A few days ago I was watching my son Matt pay for our food at a local eatery using his debit card. After swiping his card the clerk turned the small white flat screen monitor toward him and instructed him to “sign with your finger.”

The water has receded and for good we hope, this year, but there are a lot of people hurting in many ways following the epic flash flood we experienced Aug. 2 in and around Custer City. Red Cross executive director Richard Smith and his team from Rapid City have identified at least 16 families in need of immediate financial assistance after they suffered terrible losses and damage.

Following the two latest mass shootings in this country the weekend of Aug. 3 and 4 resulting in the deaths of 31 people, the media in this country seems to be on a feeding frenzy in trying to pin the blame on the president. Let’s be clear about this. The only people we can directly blame are the two shooters. The currupt national media zeroed in on the shooter in El Paso who allegedly had some kind of anti -immigrant manifesto while ignoring the other in Dayton, Ohio, who was a supporter of a liberal candidate for president. After all, the media has an agenda to follow.

Maybe it’s the endless distractions that come with summertime — like the flies buzzing around my head and the front door open to all sorts of vehicular and pedestrian sounds — but sometimes it’s hard to think of what to write for this space. Call it writer’s block. Call it sleepiness. But when a deadline is looming, something must be written!

I was recently sitting at my desk  minding my own business working when an email came in that I didn’t much care for. It was an email from Custer High School activities director Jordan Likness.
I didn’t dislike the email because it came from Jordan; he’s a good guy. I disliked the email because it was a schedule of fall sports for Custer High School. I hit reply and typed the following:
Nooooooooooooooo!!!

The above headline was a message we received from a friend of ours in Florida last week after news of the new South Dakota school law hit the national media waves. The new law was passed by the Legislature this past session and signed into law by Gov. Kristi Noem. It takes effect the beginning of this school year and requires the motto “In God We Trust” to be displayed prominently in an easily readable form in all state public schools.

Memories are made of this

I stepped outside the other day to the familiar scent of sweet clover which had dotted my yard with white flowers. When I came home that afternoon from work, I sat down in the grass to look for four-leaf clovers.
My memories carried me back to some long-buried, but precious memories of looking for four-leaf clovers as a little girl in my grandparents’ yard in Auxvasse, Mo.
My grandfather had a knack of finding four-leaf clovers and there was always a glass filled with them on my grandmother’s kitchen counter.

“It was a great weekend!” Those few words pretty much sum up this past weekend’s Gold Discovery Days events, but hardly do it justice. “It was a really great weekend,” would probably be more like it. Even the weather cooperated for a change.
