Family vacation never got going

Byron and Christina Bohnet and their daughters, Kamryn, 8, and Kirbee, 2, of Custer, were on their way west on I-90 late the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 2, when Christina received a message from a friend.
“She said we could stay with them if we needed a place to stay. I said, ‘We would be glad to stay with you sometime.’ And then she texted a photo of our home on Harbach Lane surrounded by water,” Christina said.
The family was about 30 miles west of Wall on their way to visit friends in Chamberlain when they turned around and headed back to Custer.

Reunited and it feels so good

When Kristin Grueschow of Rapid City came to Custer on Friday along with her daughter and son to look at the puppies offered for adoption, they never expected to find their own dog. However, Bandit the chihuahua was there waiting for them as one of the dogs up for adoption.

Studebaker show to return

Studebakers and Packards will be shown this year in a variety of styles during a free car and truck show in downtown Custer, Sunday, Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cars made from 1936-64 will be shown, including three convertibles. Four trucks manufactured from 1948-62 will be examples of the Studebaker practicality.   Visitors to the event will be able to vote for their favorite car or truck. The three highest number of votes received will be awarded “People’s Choice” trophies at the banquet that evening.

The 911 Misdial of the Day: A person called, asking if they had reached “the 911 line for Montana.” The dispatcher got the person’s call sent to the right state, as the person seemed to have an actual emergency to report. 
One motorcycle accident was reported in Custer County today, resulting in one injured person. 
12:02 a.m.: Disorderly downtown dudes were causing problems at a Custer bar. A deputy sent them home early. 

Schools welcome new staff

A group of both new and veteran employees of the Custer School District gathered at the Armory last Thursday to welcome and orient those new to the district. 
Incoming teachers and paraprofessionals were paired up with current staff members who will serve as mentors as they go through their first school year in Custer and Hermosa. 

Hermosa seeks support for Safe Routes to School grant

As a two-year journey toward improving the safety of walkers and bike riders in Hermosa comes to a crucial crossroads, community leaders are seeking letters of support from residents. 
Hermosa Planning and Zoning committee president Joan Harris and a group of community leaders attended the Custer Board of Education meeting in Hermosa recently to ask the district for a letter of support for a grant which will help replace broken sidewalks and build new ones to create a safe route to Hermosa School for students. 

On the move

As his former family home at Four Mile west of town comes down piece by piece to be transferred —reportedly to land off Hazelrodt Cutoff — Roy Hendrickson can’t help but see its relocation as bittersweet. He’s sad the home will no longer sit where it has been located since it was constructed in 1905, but happy it will be preserved in its new location.
“It’s kind of heart-wrenching,” he said. “But it needed something like this. It would have been nice to do it on-site.”

12:35 a.m.: Deputies responded to a possible domestic assault on Ponderosa Street in Custer. After some investigation, the incident turned out to be a verbal argument. 
7:19 a.m.: Deputies detained a person for a violation of the 24/7 Sobriety Program in Custer. The person was turned over to Pennington County deputies near the county line. 

French Creek RV Campground hit hard

On Friday afternoon, as Diane Olson was making burgers for the Friday evening barbecue that has become a tradition at French Creek RV Campground in Custer, she wondered how she should say the prayer before the meal.
Psalm 118:24 came to mind: This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
“So I said it,” she says. “And 10 minutes later, we had this. I assume God told me to say that.”
This refers to the flash flood that inundated the campground situated along French Creek that Diane manages and where she lives.
